Hong Kong and Singapore can reflect trade-hub activity. China combines enormous manufacturing scale with a comparatively low average unit value in this classification, while India and Cambodia contribute different forms of production scale.

Average customs unit value normalizes those two measures by dividing reported trade value by reported quantity. These figures are customs-value averages across the classification, not consumer retail prices.

The contrast is commercially useful because it reveals product mix. France can generate very high export value from a much smaller number of reported items than China. Italy occupies a middle position with both high value and high physical quantity. Again, these are average customs values, not store prices.

The United States therefore represents a broad product ladder: extremely high volume combined with substantial aggregate value. China imports far fewer items but at a much higher average declared value, a pattern consistent with a more premium-skewed imported product mix relative to its enormous domestic manufacturing base. Japan also stands out for high average value and comparatively modest physical volume.

Singapore also shows two-way trade, with about $423.8 million of exports and $663.1 million of imports. These flows are consistent with the role of regional trade and luxury hubs where merchandise moves through wholesale, retail and redistribution systems.

Japan reported approximately $915.6 million of imports and about 2.14 million items, producing a relatively high average customs value. South Korea reported about $1.174 billion of imports, while India recorded roughly $407.0 million of exports. Together these figures show why the region cannot be described as a manufacturing base alone.
